Updated: Jul 22, 2023

This 10 part series covers my favorite hidden gems on the Gold Coast. These are secret GC beaches perfect to slip away from the crowds and connect to nature. Included are relevant and easy-to-learn details about weather; each of the secret beaches family-friendly aspects; and hot tips that make beach visits peaceful and enjoyable.

Hidden Beach 1/10 - Lifeguard Tower 42 at Federation Walk Coastal Reserve

Video: This shady patch of beach lays within the Federation Walk Coastal Reserve only 100m from a safe seasonally-patrolled beach.

Federation Walk Coastal Reserve sits between the Southport Seaway Wall and Lifeguard Tower 42. It spans 3 kms along the beachside. The Southern end is marked by a carpark opposite SeaWorld. The nature reserve covers 60 hectares of natural habitats and boasts a network of trails ideal for bushwalking, running, biking, and immersing yourself in nature. The 3km stretch of beach in the reserve area is usually quiet and uncrowded.

Family-Friendly Features at Lifeguard Tower 42

Just a 5-minute drive from the Gold Coast CBD and Surfers Paradise, Lifeguard Tower 42 offers a peaceful Northern Gold Coast alternative to the larger, iconic North GC beaches like Surfers Paradise and Main Beach. Lifeguard Tower 42 is patrolled during the summer and school holiday seasons. This secret spot is not patrolled during the off season, owing to its smaller crowds. The closest food and dining options are about 800m South towards Fisherman’s Wharf. This beach area features an expansive carpark with convenient amenities such as toilets, outdoor taps and showers, 2 electric BBQs, 3 tables, and an outdoor gym and calisthenics area. These features make it a perfect destination for families seeking a peaceful and enjoyable beach experience.

Making the Most of the Westerly Wind and Weather

Beyond its serene location, an important factor to consider when headng to this beach is the wind. It is an ''open beach break'', meaning there are no headlands or hills protecting it from dominant GC wind patterns. This beach break is most attractive for beachgoers when the wind conditions are either 1) A light sea breeze (0-8knts) from any direction; OR 2) A North West or Westerly wind (any strength)

The curvature of the Gold Coast coastline from Coolangatta to Southport causes the Westerly wind to become more 'offshore' and less 'cross-shore' as you move northward. Why is this relevant? An offshore wind refers to the wind blowing from the land, 'offshore,' towards the ocean. The offshore breeze makes the beach and water picturesque and provides a comfortable experience on the sand. When the wind blows from the land towards the ocean, the land acts as a wind shelter making a strong wind less noticeable on the beach. The wind that does eventually touch the water's surface sweeps away ripples or 'chops,' leaving behind a clean, inviting, and irresistible ocean. A Westerly wind typically brings dry, cool breezes, clear sunny days, and pristine, glistening water.

So, if you hear that the wind is blowing from the West or North West, and you want to go to the beach, the Northern GC beaches are the perfect place!

Alternative Transportation: Lime Bicycles and Eco-Friendly Travel

For those travelling to Federation Coastal Nature Reserve without a car, there are plenty of Lime Bicycles for hire. The Lifeguard Tower is only 2.5km, approximately 8 minute bike ride, from Main Beach, Southport, and is a great alternative to get away from the crowds and immersed in nature. The bike ride from Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club is just under 5 kms.

The Secret is out: Federation Walk Coastal Reserve Beach

The Lifeguard Tower at Federation Walk Coastal Reserve serves as a wonderful family-friendly alternative to the popular GC beaches, especially during holiday seasons when parents and children seek a refreshing swim. The optimal weather condition for this beach includes a W or NW wind direction. With lifeguard patrols available during peak holiday seasons, visitors can enjoy a safe beach experience with a peaceful nature reserve to explore nearby. The beach is complemented by convenient car parking and essential amenities. The closest beachside playground for young children is a few km away at Main beach (although SeaWorld is just across the road!), and dining options are available within a short distance of approximately 800 meters.
